Points related to Talbiyah (saying Labyaka Allahuma labyak):
1- The word labyak is derived from the verb ulaby which is to respond to a call. As such the act of talbiyah will be responding to a call. Saying Labyak means here I am responding.
2- Scholars are consensus that the act of Talhiyah is a confirmed Sunnah.
3- The best Haj is the A`aj and THaj according to hadeeth.
4- A`aj means raising the voice while saying the Talbiyah.
5- THaj means slaughtering the sacrifice.
6- It was proved that the Messenger Salla Allah a`lyhee wa sallam used the following form of Talbiyah:
“Labyaka Allahuma labyak labyaka la shareeka laka labyak”
Translation is:
To You I respond O Allah, to You I respond You Who have no associates or partners. He only said that.
7- It was proved that the companions added to the form of Talbiyah while the Messenger Salla Allah a`lyhee wa sallam heard them and didn’t object as what was reported by Bukhari regarding the hadeeth narrated by Ibn Omar may Allah be pleased with both of them saying:
“Labyaka wa sa`dyak walkhyru fee yadayk”
Here I am responding to You and at Your service, good is in Your hands.
They also used:
“Labyaka Elahelhaqu Labyak, Labyaka warrghba-a wal`amal elyak”
To You Deity of the truth I respond, to You I respond and seeking support and deeds are all to You.
8- The Messenger salla Allah A`alyhee wa sallam did not object about the additional forms which makes it permissible.
9- Some scholars saw the permissibility of adding any form of glorification of Allah based on the hadeeth of Ibn Omar may Allah be pleased with both of them which generalized the forms saying: We used to add and he didn’t object.
10- As for men it is recommended to raise their voices while making Talbiyah based on the several hadeeth. It was proved that the companions used to loose their voices by the time they arrive at Ka`ba.
11- Scholars are consensus that women must not raise their voices while making Talbiyah. However, she may only make it loud enough to hear herself.
12- The same rules apply for children either male or female.
13- For Haj and Ummrah to be valid and sound, it suffices to take the Niyah, and make talbiyah during the rest of the rituals. Actually there isn’t specific wordings or forms of dua to be made during Haj or Ummra.
14- The meaning of Talbiyah is a response after another. First responding to the call of Ibraheem Salla Allah a`lyhee wa sallam included in the Ayah:”
” And proclaim to mankind the Haj (pilgrimage). They will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, they will come from every deep and distant (wide) mountain highway (to perform Haj).” (Quran 22:27)
